Hovenweep National Monument
Hovenweep National Monument Canyons of the Ancients is 164,000 acres managed by the BLM. Within that area, a few tiny pockets of land are under the supervision of the National Park Service.

Hovenweep is a Ute word meaning “deserted valley”.

This is the Cutthroat Castle, which is accessed via the same dirt road as Painted Hand. Beyond these sites, we followed the loop road thru Hovenweep and Negro Canyons. It turned out to be pretty rough going in some spots, but all very exciting.
