South Island: Wanaka
Wanaka
Wanaka is an attractive and growing resort town on the shore of Lake Wanaka. Visitors can take part in most any outdoor adventure activity known, from jet boats and waterskiing to bungy jumping and helicopter fly-overs. Mountain biking and hiking opportunities in the area are exceptional, offering views that are especially gorgeous. It's quite an up and coming tourist center. Everything is there to rival Queenstown except a good restaurant.

Given our midday arrival, we opted to do a much needed load of laundry at the very clean and hospitable Alpine Lodge. While the laundry was drying on the line, we did take a short hike on the Diamond Lake trail overlooking Glendhu Bay. The views of Wanaka and the Mt. Aspiring National Park were breathtaking.
